Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have acquired a knowledge of the materials and technology of book production, as an illustration of historical processes and as an illumination of current problems, particularly in preservation.
Synopsis A study of the changing technologies of book production in the Western tradition from the fifteenth century onwards; and the bibliographical control of incunabula and other pre-1801 printed books. Taught in conjunction with LAR4040, but with the added requirement that students hand-set a short text and print it on a flat-bed press.
Assessment Two essays: 60%
