Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have an informed awareness of the professional literature and the capacity to analyse critically research publications in the field.

Synopsis A study of the literature of librarianship, with particular reference to advances in the state of knowledge and to associated research activities. The study will also include, where relevant, reference to literature from other professions and disciplines, both for contributions to content and theory in librarianship and to methods and techniques in library research. Published research and research in progress will be examined, to illustrate the procedures and techniques involved. Normally required in the first semester of MIM candidature.

Assessment Two essays: 55%
* Seminar participation and presentation: 45%
