This specialisation is for those interested in the science and practice of applied behaviour analysis in clinic, home, school and work settings, as well as those aiming to become Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs). You will be provided with the knowledge and tools to help people with diverse needs learn new skills, become more independent, and overcome socially important problems, using empirically-supported assessment, teaching, and intervention strategies. You will be orientated to the field of behaviour analysis and the major theoretical and professional debates in science and practice. You will gain knowledge and expertise in the following areas:

  • philosophy and science of learning
  • concepts and principles of behaviour analysis and their application with diverse populations
  • identification and assessment of behaviours
  • function-based behavioural treatment
  • evidence-based teaching practices for behaviour analysts
  • experimental design for research in behaviour analysis
  • data collection, analysis, and data-based decision-making
  • performance management and supervision
  • professional ethics for behaviour analysts

The units in this specialisation have theoretical and practical relevance to professionals in a range of contexts, including early intervention, general education, inclusive and special education, and specialised behaviour support. You will be challenged to make connections between research and practice and will be equipped to pursue education-related careers and/or further study in education.

To be eligible to sit the board certification examination, students must complete three requirements:

  1. Students must possess a master's degree in education, psychology, or applied behaviour analysis. Completion of Monash University's MEd in ABA specialisation fulfils this requirement.
  2. Students must complete a course sequence in behaviour analysis that has been verified by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI). A Verified Course Sequence (VCS) is a sequence of courses that has been verified by the ABAI as meeting specific faculty and coursework standards. Completion of Monash University's MEd in ABA specialisation fulfils this requirement.
  3. Students must complete a period of supervised independent fieldwork. Monash University does not provide supervised independent fieldwork placements to students, and completion of supervised independent fieldwork is not a requirement for graduation from the MEd in ABA specialisation.     The credential of Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a graduate-level certification in behaviour analysis. Professionals who are certified at the BCBA level are independent practitioners who design, supervise, and provide behaviour analytic services. BCBAs can also supervise the work of Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts, Registered Behavior Technicians, and others who implement behaviour analytic interventions.

Students studying counselling at Monash enrol in a skills-based course that investigates evidence-based theories and frameworks related to counselling and psychotherapy. Students learn to relate various counselling approaches and strategies across developmental stages (childhood, adolescence, adulthood, old age) while developing a deeper understanding of themselves, their personal values and preferred styles of counselling. The ethical practice of counselling and skills to write case notes and make appropriate referrals are covered. Counselling prepares professionals to work in a wide variety of fields including careers counselling, child and family services, child protection services, child and adolescent counselling, counselling, education, family counselling, health policy, health services management and rehabilitation counselling. Students are taught by academics with extensive experience working as professional counsellors and/or psychologists. In addition to their academic study, Master of Counselling students undertake a minimum of 250 hours of professional experience and Master of Professional Counselling students undertake a minimum of 806 hours of clinical placements.

Professional counselling studies provides knowledge and skills for professionals working in a range of education, community, industrial and service-related settings. The Professional counselling specialisation covers major approaches to counselling, provides training in counselling practice and research, and introduces the study of ethical and professional issues in undertaking counselling as a profession.

Leading school communities to rethink and reform how and what is taught and learnt is the focus of this specialisation which is available in four streams: digital learning, literacy, mathematics and science. This specialisation will prepare you to teach infants and children from birth to 12 years of age in childcare, kindergartens, preschools and primary schools. You will learn how to engage young children in meaningful learning through innovative pedagogical practice and you will learn how to help them develop their creative, physical, personal, intellectual and social capabilities. You will learn how to support children's transition to school and their progress through the primary years. You will actively engage with contemporary theories, concepts and practices of early years and primary education, developing inclusive practices to meet children's diverse needs and building a repertoire of strategies to manage children's learning in classroom settings. This program provides doctoral (PhD) students with the opportunity to develop expertise in their chosen discipline through the completion of a supervised research project.

Each student is also supported through a development program aimed at building the knowledge, skills and abilities that will help them to become more effective researchers, and develop the general professional skills of value to prospective employers in academia, industry, government and the broader community.

This program is also applicable to students studying externally.

Program requirements

All research students will be required to undertake compulsory training in the following areas:

Professional development component

Students must, in consultation with their supervisor(s), satisfactorily complete a minimum of 120 hours of graduate research professional development activities offered or recognised by the University:

  • 60 hours (minimum) of professional development activities offered or recognised from the 'Professionalism, innovation and career' category.
