Synopsis
This unit introduces students to the foundational knowledge required by midwives to effectively care for women and their babies from preconception through to early parenting.
Students will explore the fundamental clinical skills required for contemporary midwifery practice in a variety of settings.
Learning will also focus on the physiological and psychosocial adaptation of the healthy woman and child, and the application of this understanding to the provision of woman centred midwifery care.
Outcomes
- Explain in depth the normal maternal anatomical and physiological adaptations relevant to pregnancy, labour, birth and the puerperium;
- Apply the theoretical knowledge of the normal anatomical and physiological adaptations during pregnancy to describe a woman-centred approach pivotal to midwifery practice for women of all cultural backgrounds;
- Explain the role of the midwife in assessment of foetal and maternal well-being during pregnancy, labour, birth and the puerperium;
- Recognise the importance of using evidence to inform clinical practice and implement developing clinical midwifery skills in the appraisal of mother and baby during pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum;
- Describe the midwifery skills required to provide comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments when providing maternity care for women and their babies across the childbearing continuum;
- Differentiate the difference between screening and diagnostic tests and list the routine screening and basic diagnostic tests in pregnancy, labour and birth assessment;
- Explain the need for reflective practice in the implementation of evidence informed care;
- Demonstrate developing midwifery competence based upon the ANMC National Competency Standards for the Midwife.
Fieldwork
80 hours clinical placement in a maternity unit.Students are required to participate in a two week clinical placement. In line with ANMAC requirements they are also required to undertake Continuity of Care relationships with women x 2.
Assessment
- Essay (3000 words) (30%)
- Invigilated online test (1 hour) (15%)
- Exam (2 hours) (40%) (hurdle)
- Clinical Placement Antenatal clinic including relevant learning tools (80 hours) (15%) (hurdle)
- Continuity of care clinical report x 2 or submission of reflective piece in Mid + Clinical Portfolio (500 words x 2) (Hurdle).
Workload requirements
Lectures: 2 hour x 10 weeks (20 hours)
Tutorials/CLE: 2 x 10 weeks (100% attendance required) (20 hours)
Weekly online guided activities : 6 hours per week (60 hours)
Self-directed learning : 6 hours per week (60 hours)
Clinical placement linked to skills assessment: 80 hours
Continuity of Care clinical hours: 20 hours
