The focus of learning for this unit is the role of the midwife and their function within the contemporary maternity environments.

Students will explore the philosophical foundations of midwifery practice and demonstrate an understanding of the basic premises "being with woman", "woman centeredness" and "working in partnership" in preparation for assuming the role of a midwife.

Students will be introduced to the significance of health promotion in midwifery practice and gain a preliminary understanding of the importance of women's health assessments.

This unit will also introduce students to specific cultural and ethical considerations that are important in the provision of maternity care for women from a variety of backgrounds.


Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the philosophical foundations of midwifery, the models of maternity care and the midwife's scope of practice;
  2. Describe the essential components required to perform a comprehensive women's health assessment;
  3. Examine factors impacting the care of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander childbearing women and those from different cultures;

  4. Apply theoretical knowledge of health promotion to issues relevant to maternity care;
  5. Describe legal and ethical issues that demonstrate a beginning understanding relevant to midwifery practice;
  6. Demonstrate beginning level competency based upon the ANMC National Competency Standards for the Midwife;


  • Written assignment (2,500 words) (40%) (Hurdle)
  • Group poster presentation (15%)
  • Peer assessment of group poster presentation (10%) and group self-assessment (5%)
  • Case study (1500 words) (30%)

Workload requirements

Guided online pre-learning modules: 2 hour per week

Workshop: 2 hour per week

Tutorials: 2 hours per week

Self-directed learning post-class: 6 hour per week

Attendance is mandatory at 80% of tutorials in this unit. If absent for more than 20% of tutorials, appropriate documentation must be supplied e.g. medical certificate.
