Master of Business Systems Professional

Course description

This course is an expanded version of the existing Master of Business Systems. It consists of compulsory foundation information technology studies and provides scope for specialisation in both the management and technical aspects of business systems.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a first degree that is recognised as equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications can enter via the Professional Certificate in Information Technology or Executive Certificate in Information Technology.

Course structure

Students complete 16 units as follows (all units 6 points):

(a) foundation units (24 points):

  • FIT9003 Database systems analysis and implementation
  • FIT9004 Computer programming for business
  • FIT9005 Computer networks and architecture
  • FIT9006 Information technology management

(b) two of the following professional tracks* (48 points) – each professional track comprises four units (24 points):

*Note that units appearing below in multiple professional tracks may be counted only once, as part of a single professional track. Units that form part of a professional track are also available individually as electives provided any prerequisite requirements have been satisfied.

Business systems implementation professional track

Four units selected from:

  • BUS4011 Advanced computer programming for business
  • BUS5021 Advanced business information systems
  • BUS5150 Project management
  • BUS5410 Advanced programming for database applications
  • BUS9042 Computer programming for business

Electronic commerce professional track

Four units selected from:

  • BUS5020 Trading systems and electronic (B2B) commerce

  • BUS5700 Integrated business systems SAP R/3
  • BUS5710 Applied e-business – B2B
  • BUS5960 B2C internet commerce
  • BUS9042 Computer programming for business

Business decision support systems professional track

Four units selected from:

  • BUS5030 Financial modelling
  • BUS5502 Business process design
  • BUS5550 Business statistics
  • BUS5570 Computer models for business decision
  • BUS5650 Business applications of neural networks
  • BUS5750 Applied intelligent techniques for business modelling
  • BUS5800 Risk analysis models for business
  • BUS5900 Advanced computational finance

Operations management systems professional track

Four units selected from:

  • BUS4420 Logistics and operations research methods
  • BUS5502 Business process design
  • BUS5540 Quality and reliability
  • BUS5630 Operations management systems
  • BUS5720 Corporate groupware

Project management professional track

Completion of the following four units:

Completion of the following four units:

(c) four postgraduate general electives – these must be level 4 or above and may be selected from any school in the university. No more than 18 points may be taken from outside the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University.

Exit awards

Students wishing to exit the Master of Business Systems Professional early may apply to graduate with the:

  • Graduate Certificate in Business Systems after successful completion of 24 points of study, or
  • Graduate Diploma in Business Systems, after successful completion of 48 points of study, or
  • Master of Business Systems, after successful completion of 72 points of study

provided they have satisfied the requirements for these awards.

Professional recognition

The Faculty of Information Technology has applied for accreditation in 2007 for the Master of Business Systems Professional from the Australian Computer Society (ACS) which may enable graduates of the course to be eligible for professional-level membership of the ACS.
