Study mode and course location

On-campus (Clayton)

Course description

The course structure accommodates those wishing to upgrade their previous qualifications with studies in business systems. The course is intended for those who wish to undertake project work and specialise in a specific area within business systems.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to complete the Master of Business Systems (Projects) will normally enrol initially in the Master of Business Systems. Students achieving a suitably high academic standard in their first semester of study and who wish to either specialise in a specific area of business systems or wish to include a greater practical component may have the option to enrol in one or more of the school’s project units. For further details of entry requirements, refer to the Master of Business Systems (course code: 2398).

Course structure

The course consists of 12 units (72 points) – seven core units and five electives:

(a) core units*:

(b) one business systems postgraduate elective unit (level 4 or above).

(c) two postgraduate electives – these must be level 4 or above units offered by the Faculty of Information Technology. Non-business systems units may only be taken with permission of the school responsible for the unit.

(d) two postgraduate general electives – these must be level 4 or above units offered by any faculty within the university (including the Faculty of Information Technology). Non-business systems units may only be taken with permission of the school responsible for the unit.

* During 2007 some of the core units above will be replaced by equivalent FIT coded units (see entry for Master of Business Systems – 2398); students should check the faculty website for more information.

** Offered on-campus and by off-campus learning.

Credit for prior studies

Generally, students who have completed similar units in previous studies will normally be required to make substitutions. Credit will only be granted for postgraduate units that have not counted for the award of any other degree or diploma. Where credit is granted, the number of non-business systems elective units that can be taken is reduced.

Applicants who hold an honours degree in Business Systems or Business Information Systems from Monash University or Graduate Diploma in Business Systems from Monash University will normally be granted credit equivalent to four units.

Professional recognition

The Faculty of Information Technology has applied for accreditation in 2007 for the Master of Business Systems from the Australian Computer Society (ACS) which may enable graduates of the course to be eligible for professional-level membership of the ACS.
