Course description

This course develops practitioner skills on a comprehensive analytical and conceptual basis. It is ideally suited for industrial relations and human resources practitioners and for managers. It focuses upon the workplace while making the necessary connections with the broader institutional and legal framework.

Credit for prior studies

Candidates articulating from an executive certificate, graduate certificate or graduate diploma in the department of Management will be eligible for credit for a maximum of eight units (48 points) for study undertaken in the last five years.

Other candidates may be eligible for credit for a maximum of eight units (48 points) to accommodate course articulation or for units which are considered to be equivalent to particular requirements in the course of study. Credit is restricted to study undertaken in the last five years and must be approved by the program manager.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete eight core units (48 points) from the following list:

  • BTX9070 Labour relations law
  • MGX5080 Workplace negotiations
  • MGX5090 Strategic industrial and workplace relations
  • MGX5160 Advocacy and bargaining
  • MGX5670 Leadership
  • MGX9180 Employee relations, or MGX9850 Human resource management
  • MGX9220 Industrial and workplace relations
  • MGX9600 Managing people and organisations

(b) Students must complete four elective units (24 points) with a minimum of two 5000-level elective units. In place of two electives taught by the Department of Management, students may enrol in units taught outside the department.

Elective selection must meet overall course objectives and receive program manager approval.

Students must study a minimum of six 5000-level units or equivalent.

Students should complete four 9000-level graduate units before commencing 5000-level units.
