Synopsis

Students are provided with an appreciation of the importance of industrial and employee relations in the strategic management of organisations. The unit explores three levels of strategy development: macro which includes government industrial relations policy, mezzo which investigates strategy in peak organisations such as employer bodies and the ACTU, and micro which includes strategy in individual organisations and trade unions.

Objectives

The learning goals associated with this unit are to:

• investigate the levels at which industrial and workplace relations strategy are formulated and operationalised, including the relationship between strategy and policy
• analyse the factors influencing successful strategic management of industrial and workplace relations
• analyse the strategy process and implications for different industrial and workplace relations parties (employer associations, trade unions, the AIRC, the OEA, the AFPC, the state)
• identify and evaluate the components of the strategic management process as they relate to industrial and workplace relations in an organisational context
• analyse the interaction of industrial and workplace relations strategic theory and practice
• apply in practice, via case studies and experiential learning, principles of strategic industrial and workplace relations management.

Individual assignment 1: 40% (3500 words)
Individual assignment 2: 40% (3500 words)
Class Assessment: 20% (individual presentation
500 word report)
