Course description

The course is designed to meet the needs of professionals in communications and related sectors. The program offers three postgraduate qualifications, with entry points into faculty certificate, graduate diploma and masters programs, and exit points at faculty/graduate certificate, graduate diploma and masters levels.

The entire masters program encompasses a sequence of 72 points of full-time or part-time study on-campus or through off-campus learning. The course is offered within Australia and internationally. It provides a unique focus on convergent knowledge and the understanding and integration of multiple communication systems and practices. The curriculum includes the policy, organisational, technical, persuasive, visual, aesthetic, written, economic, political, ethical, planning, systems, and logistical facets of communications.

Entry requirements

A bachelors degree with at least a credit average in the final year; or a bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience (a minimum of two years) at management level (for example program coordinator, team leader) in a relevant area (these applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and the names of two professional referees); or completion of a graduate diploma with credit (or above) average.

Applicants with significant relevant experience without a graduate qualification may apply for entry into the Faculty Certificate of Communications.

Course structure

To graduate with the Master of Communications, students must complete a maximum of 48 points at level 4 (three core units plus one elective unit), with a minimum of 24 points at level 5 (two elective units, or the 24-point dissertation).

  • COM4201 Communication organisations and technologies
  • COM4202 Communication policy and management
  • COM4203 Communication systems and networks
  • COM4204 Communication economies and society

Exit points

After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a Graduate Certificate in Communications, or after successful completion of 48 points with a Graduate Diploma in Communications.

Minimum pass grade

To graduate with the Master of Communications, students must gain a credit (60 C) or above in core units and a minimum credit average overall.
