Synopsis: The unit introduces key concepts in contemporary communications theory. It surveys the key thinkers and theoretical issues that define the communications field. Students engage with core ideas in the communications discipline, especially those relevant to understanding the information age. The unit discusses how theory,'s concepts are used in the critical analysis of the symbolic, political, social, and economic spheres in which communications are embedded.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate: 1. Knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for the understanding of key concepts underpinning the communications discipline and their application in the analysis of social institutions; 2. Increased understanding of and competency in analysis at the conceptual level; 3. Increased understanding of the contribution of theories to understanding the large-scale and long-term context in which communications develop; 4. Increased knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary for independent research, enhanced capacity to formulate and research communication theory, to analyse and evaluate arguments, and to understand critical approaches to communication theory; 5. Enhanced intellectual independence, and greater self-reliance and critical distance in intellectual and professional activity through a better understanding of the social impact of conceptual frameworks.

Assessment: Assignment 1 Research Essay (4000 words): 40%, Assignment 2 Research Essay (5000 words): 60%.

Contact Hours: On-Campus: 2 hours (1x2 hour seminar) per week. Off-campus: Students will be expected to participate for a minimum of one hour per fortnight in on-line discussion.
