Synopsis: The unit introduces students to the fundamentals of communication research methodologies, research project design, the planning, writing and editing of research, and the formulation of a research proposal.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate: 1. Knowledge, skills and attributes necessary for understanding and engaging in advanced research; 2. Increased understanding of the methods of communication research; 3. Increased understanding of approaches to planning and designing research, and to writing and editing research; 4. Increased knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary for independent research, enhanced capacity to formulate and research communication issues, to analyse and evaluate arguments, and to understand critical approaches to the planning, writing and editing of research; 5. Enhanced intellectual independence, and greater self-reliance and critical distance in academic and professional research activity; 6. Significantly increased capacity to design, manage, and carry out research projects.

Assessment: Assignment 1 Literature Review (3000 words): 30%; Assignment 2 Research Plan (6000 words): 70%

Contact Hours: On-Campus: 2 hours (1x2 hour seminar) per week. Off-campus: Students will be expected to participate for a minimum of one hour per fortnight in on-line discussion.
