Bachelor of Business (Accounting)/Bachelor of Computing


General information

Course code: 1197 + Course abbreviation: BBus(Acc)/BComp + Course coordinator: Dr Geoff Speight + Adviser, computing units: Ms Dianne Hagan

This course is a combination of two degree programs. It aims to provide a sound accounting and computing basis that will enable graduates to deal with any form of accounting and business activity, particularly the application of computerised business systems.

Candidates completing this program qualify for the degrees of Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and Bachelor of Computing.

Entry requirements

(a) Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in English (any) and mathematics (any).

(b) Comparable qualifications

Applicants may also satisfy entry requirements with qualifications equivalent to the VCE, eg TAFE qualifications (the first year of a TAFE associate diploma or equivalent TAFE qualification) or comparable Year 12 qualifications, including International Baccalaureate, or other approved tertiary study.

(c) Special admission

Students who have not successfully completed VCE or equivalent may satisfy entry requirements by completing at least two Monash non-award single units or open learning (OLA) units. Fees

Fees will depend upon the student's residency status. Local residents will be liable for either the fees set by the government under the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) or for full tuition fees as determined by the university. Advanced standing (credit for work done elsewhere)

The following credit transfers have been standardised for the Bachelor of Business (Accounting)/Bachelor of Computing. In all cases, at least 16 equivalent semester units must be completed at Monash University before a candidate is eligible for the award.

Professional accreditation

On graduating, candidates will meet the academic requirements for entry to the professional year of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and satisfy the requirements of the Australian Computer Society in meeting the level 1 standard of knowledge for membership.

Mode of offering

Day and evening classes are offered at Caulfield. Not all units are offered in all semesters.

Duration

The course will normally be completed in four years on a full-time basis and eight years on a part-time basis, with the usual load being two or three units per semester. Evening classes are held between the hours of 6 pm and 10 pm, with students attending two or three evenings per week.

Reversion to a single degree

1. During the course of study a candidate may apply for an internal transfer to continue studies for one degree only. If this is granted the candidate shall discontinue studies for one degree and, with the approval of the Faculty Board which administers the degree to be continued, he or she shall complete the course of study for the degree in accordance with any conditions and requirements and within the time period specified and approved by that Faculty Board.
2. A candidate, having completed all the requirements of the Bachelor of Business (Accounting), may apply to the Faculty of Business and Economics to graduate in the completed degree. In this case, they will be required to discontinue the other part of their double degree.

Computing electives may be units from the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering. These units may have codes of COT, SFT or CSE; or information systems units from the Department of Information Management and Systems.

Progression to further studies

Completion of the BBus(Acc)/BComp will enable progression to an honours year and a variety of postgraduate courses either at Monash or other Australian or overseas universities. Details of specific postgraduate courses are available on inquiry with the faculty.
