Synopsis: Introduction to the concepts necessary for planning, designing, using and implementing database systems. Database design. Structures and techniques underlying databases: file organisations, data structures, index structures. The database concept: data sharing, related data, data independence, data integrity, data dictionary. Relational databases: referential and entity integrity, SQL data definition, creating and amending tables and rows, data manipulation, distributed database, data warehousing and data mining.

Assessment: Examination (2 hours): 60% + Practical work: 40%

Contact Hours: One 2-hour lecture and one 2-hour tutorial per week

Prerequisites: COT1140,CSE1201 or equivalent
