This one-year full-time or two-year part-time course offers selected students the opportunity for specialised study in banking and finance, management or marketing at an advanced level.

The course aims to provide a post-degree level of study for students seeking to widen their knowledge in one of the specialist areas offered by the departments and to expose students to both substantive theory and practice of research in the field of business. The course gives graduates the training necessary to conduct independent high-quality research in either business or academic settings, cultivates analytical and critical skills, and an awareness of emerging developments in business. The course is particularly suited to those who may wish to undertake further study at the higher degree level.

Entry requirements

A bachelors degree from an approved tertiary institution. Applicants need to have attained a minimum average grade of 65 per cent in the relevant disciplines in the final two years of undergraduate studies for consideration.

Mode of offering

Day and evening classes are offered at the Caulfield campus. The mode of offering varies between departments, and students should consult the department with which they are enrolled for honours. The management stream must be studied full-time by `on-campus' attendance. The total formal time commitment is 12 hours per week for two semesters. Students should be prepared to devote a further 36 hours per week to private study. A Bachelor of Business (Honours) course is also offered at the Gippsland campus.

Course structure

Banking and finance stream

To qualify for the honours degree in the banking and finance stream, a candidate shall complete:

• AFF4060 Research methods I
• AFF4061 Research methods II
• AFF4901 Research report (equivalent to four units of study)
• AFF4015 Advanced topics in banking, and
• AFF4021 Advanced topics in finance

Management stream

To qualify for the honours degree in the management stream, a candidate shall complete:

• MGF4020 Data analysis for organisational research
• MGF4030 Perspectives and paradigms in management theory
• MGF4900 Research report
• MGF4000 Contemporary issues in management
• Those students who have not completed MGF3421 (Introductory management research methods) in their third year of study will be required to undertake this unit as their additional unit, or
• The third-year or fourth-year units taught by the departments of Management, Accounting and Finance, Business Law and Taxation, Econometrics and Business Statistics, Economics, and Marketing. Third- year units may be undertaken on the condition that the unit has not been undertaken in third year, and that the appropriate prerequisites are met. Additionally, third-year units must be supplemented by additional supervised work. In order to undertake a unit from another department, the head of the Department of Management must be satisfied that the unit forms a coherent part of the proposed course of study, or
• MGF4040 Management field project (whole year).

Marketing stream

To qualify for the honours degree in the marketing stream, a candidate shall complete:

• MKF4900 Research project
• MKF4040 Interpretative research and method in marketing
• MKF4010 Developing a marketing orientation
• MKF4020 History and philosophy of marketing, and
• MKF4030 Advanced business research methods for marketing honours

Taxation stream

To qualify for the honours degree in the taxation stream, a candidate shall complete: BTF4900 (Research report), plus six of the following units or eight of the following units, or other appropriate units offered by the Department of Business Law and Taxation as approved by the course coordinator. In addition, candidates may take up to two other equivalent units from any other department, with the approval of the course coordinator.

Progression to further studies

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Business (Honours) degree, students may apply for admission to a masters by research, or other postgraduate programs.
