General information

Course code: 2026 Course abbreviation: BCom/BEd Clayton campus Contacts: Dr Deborah Corrigan (telephone (03) 9905 2819 for initial education inquiries) or Ms Jo Atkinson (telephone (03) 9905 2327 for initial commerce inquiries)
When students take the Bachelor of Commerce degree and the Bachelor of Education degree in combination, they are able to complete both courses in four-and-a-half years of full-time study at a normal course load for each year. Students may complete the course in four years of full-time study by special arrangement with both faculties. A feature of this course is its interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of some subjects.
The course is aimed at primary or post-primary/adult education levels. On completion of the double degree, graduates will have a sound preparation for entry into the business and/or the education and training professions and have developed a broad cross-disciplinary approach to professional development and working in the community. Opportunities also exist for further study.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the VCE or its equivalent and have achieved a study score of at least 25 in English units 3 and 4 and in one of Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics, and a study score of at least 20 in any other two VCE studies.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Education, a candidate must successfully complete subjects totalling 204 points, consisting of:
(a) Studies in commerce (108 points) chosen from subjects offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton), which must include:
(i) the following compulsory subjects:

(ii) a major in a discipline or field of study of the faculty. This requires students to complete 48 points of study in a single discipline or field of study with at least 12 points at each of second and third year levels. Disciplines are defined by department prefixes, and fields of study are those sets of related subjects that may be defined in the catalogue of courses and subjects.
(iii) a maximum of eight first-year-level subjects (48 credit points). In order to meet this requirement, students are able to undertake the second-year versions of the appropriate number of compulsory subjects.
In order to meet the prerequisites for methods and practice of teaching, at least four economics subjects and four accounting subjects, or at least four economics subjects and four management subjects must be undertaken.
(b) Studies in education (96 points) chosen from the Faculty of Education, which must follow either the primary or secondary stream course structure as set out below.
Candidates intending to qualify as secondary teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in commerce must satisfy the requirements for the study of two teaching methods in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down by the Victorian Department of Education, Employment and Training and non-government authorities.
Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching method in fourth year, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year which will be entirely education, including an extended teaching practicum. This practicum is a program of field visits to different educational sites, and includes structured teaching experience. Students will be required to complete projects related to their field visits. The visits are an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education.

Course outline

For the education component of the double degree, students will choose either primary or secondary education subjects. Secondary education subjects will be offered at Clayton campus and primary subjects at Peninsula campus.
