Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) and Bachelor of Education, a candidate for the double degree must successfully complete subjects totalling 204 points, consisting of:
(a) Studies in industrial design (108 points), which include studios at each year stage. Subjects commence at a basic level of understanding and progress to the achievement of a high level of competence in undertaking industrial design projects. The knowledge and capabilities acquired in the other subjects of the course are progressively incorporated into the work of the studio subjects and integrated into the design solutions.
(b) Studies in education (96 points), consisting of a series of subjects relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Practicum placements are also included.
Candidates intending to qualify as secondary teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in design must satisfy the requirements for the study of two teaching methods in their fourth year and the requirements for employment laid down by the Department of Education, Employment and Training and non-government authorities.
Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching method in fourth year, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline.
Progressively over the course students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year which will be entirely education, including an extended teaching practicum. This practicum is a program of field visits to different educational sites including structured teaching experience. Students will be required to complete projects related to their field visits. The visits are an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program. Opportunities also exist for further study.
