The Centre for Graduate Studies in Clinical Nursing (MMC Clayton) offers a
Graduate Diploma of Midwifery in partnership with the Southern Health Care
Network. This course will enable nurses to develop the skills, knowledge and
attitudes necessary to gain endorsement by the Nurses Board of Victoria to
practice as a midwife.
The
overall aim of the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery is to produce a graduate who,
when registered, is prepared to:
- give the necessary supervision, care and advice to women during the
preconceptual interval, pregnancy, labour, and the postpartum period;
- accept responsibility for the birth of the baby and the care of the
newborn infant, in a range of settings;
- provide preventive measures, the detection of abnormal conditions,
procurement of medical assistance and the execution of emergency measures in
the absence of medical help;
- provide health counselling and education of childbearing families and
the community.
Upon
completion of all course requirements, it is expected that graduates will:
- demonstrate skills specific to the practice of midwifery as described in
the above aims;
- strive to maintain and raise the standard of midwifery care;
- acknowledge responsibility for the development of professional and
personal standards.
Successful
applicants will normally have:
- a degree;
- a current RN practising certificate;
- at least one year professional clinical experience
Special entry
to the course is available.
Students
will be required to undertake three core subjects and five specialist subjects
for a total of eight subjects. Students may enrol full-time and complete the
course in one year. Alternatively, in a part-time enrolment, students will
normally complete the course in two years. Subjects are scheduled in a manner
which enables the students to undertake part-time employment.
