Target group

The Master of Education in the Teaching of Languages Other Than English degree is designed for teachers desiring to expand their qualifications in the methodology and principles of second language acquisition.

Objectives

The major objectives of the Master of Education (LOTE) pathway are to provide students with knowledge and understanding of:

Special admission requirements

Candidates will hold a university degree including a three-year post Year 12 major in a language other than English or its equivalent.
Prior to enrolment, all students must have their proposed course approved by the LOTE program coordinator. Students who are not qualified LOTE teachers may be required to complete designated units in LOTE methodology and practice

Course structure

Core subjects

Students must choose one of these two options:

Option 1

and

or

or

plus three subjects from the electives list and a project.

Option 2

and

plus six subjects from the electives list.

Elective subjects

or any two approved subjects from the Faculty of Arts, in particular the following:

Linguistics department
Japanese department
Other

Project

The project, of approximately 20,000 words, must focus on a topic relevant to teaching languages other than English. Students intending to enrol in the project must complete an appropriate research methodology subject.

Credit provision

Credit for all subjects undertaken as part of either a Graduate Certificate or a Graduate Diploma in LOTE, or a Graduate Certificate or a Graduate Diploma in Bilingual/Immersion Education, in this faculty may be transferred to the Master of Education (LOTE).
