Establishing, maintaining and evaluating an immersion program

12 points - 3 hours per week - Second semester - Clayton - Prerequisites: A three-year major post-Year 12 in a language other than English or its recognised equivalent and a recognised initial teaching qualification

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify the characteristics of a bilingual/immersion program for their particular school context; design an evaluation program for their bilingual/immersion program; identify and plan for the learning needs and styles of students in an on-going bilingual/immersion program; begin to design a bilingual/immersion program for their school context in a range of subject areas across a number of consecutive year levels.

Synopsis This subject aims to provide teachers in bilingual/immersion LOTE programs with a thorough grounding in the principles and theories of curriculum and syllabus design which have a direct impact on the production of their program. It also aims at providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills to produce an effective bilingual program and with strategies for maintaining and evaluating this. The course will examine the relationship between the Curriculum Standards Frameworks for the key learning areas and the delivery of these areas in a LOTE.

Assessment Evaluation proposal (1500 words): 25% - Essay (3000 words): 25% - Outline of a bilingual/immersion program (1500 words): 50%
