In first semester of second year, the subject RAD2011 (Radiographic imaging and methods 3) covers the technical and physical principles underpinning fluoroscopic imaging, the radiographic methods for mobile and theatre radiography, the abdomen and the gastrointestinal tract, and introduces students to IT in medical imaging. In RAD2021 (Radiologic biology 3), students study the structure, function and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Surface anatomy, radiographic cross sectional anatomy and radiographic pathology is included. The principles of the pharmacology of radiographic contrast media are covered in RAD2031 (Pharmacology) and appropriate clinical experience is undertaken in RAD2041 (Clinical studies 3).
In second semester, students study the contrast examinations for the urinary and hepato-biliary systems, paediatric radiography and are introduced to digital image processing in medical imaging in RAD2052 (Radiographic methods 4 and digital image processing 1). They study the anatomical and physiological principles pertinent to the urinary and hepato-biliary systems, common disorders and the relevant surface anatomy, radiographic cross sectional anatomy and radiographic pathology in RAD2062 (Radiologic biology 4). RAD2072 (Professional skills 3) provides students with the knowledge of patient care required for the contrast examinations of the urinary, gastro-intestinal and hepato-biliary systems. Clinical practice in contrast radiography is undertaken in RAD2082 (Clinical studies 4).
The subjects studied in second year employ a variety of teaching methods including combinations of:
A variety of assessment is undertaken in second year in both formal examinations and coursework. Many subjects hold end-of-semester examinations where a selection of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, calculations, longer essay-style questions and oral exams may be used by examiners. During their clinical studies students will be required to keep a record of their radiographic examinations, undertake a structured assessment of their clinical skills and complete and present for peer review a clinical case study and maintain a professional development portfolio.
