Pharmacology

Objectives On completion of this subject students will have a broad understanding of the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics as applicable to the contrast agents utilised in radiology; have a sound understanding of the contrast agents used in imaging the gastrointestinal, hepato-biliary, urinary and central nervous system; and be able to apply the knowledge in assisting with the administration of these drugs.

Synopsis Historical overview. Modern radiographic contrast agents - iodinated and non-iodinated. Non-ionic, ionic and low osmolar ionic contrast agents. The interactions of these agents with body tissues and associated pharmacodynamics. Factors that influence the administration of radiographic contrast agents. Adverse effects. Analgesics.
