Radiologic biology 4

Objectives On completion of this subject students should have a sound understanding of the anatomical and physiological principles pertinent to the hepato-biliary and urinary systems and the structure and functional relationships of the organs comprising these systems; have a detailed knowledge of the relevant surface and radiographic anatomy and a basic understanding of the common disorders affecting these systems and their radiographic appearances.

Synopsis The anatomical structure of the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. Carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism by the liver; blood tests to evaluate the status of the liver; excretion of bile and bile salts; emptying of the gallbladder, pancreatic juice, regulation of pancreatic secretions. The anatomical structure of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Glomerular filtration, tubular filtration, secretion and renal clearance; mechanism of urine dilution and concentration. Radiographic appearances of the normal liver, gall bladder and pancreas; diseases of the liver; infections and inflammations affecting the liver; cirrhosis of the liver; neoplasms of the liver; diseases of the gall bladder; diseases of the pancreas: congenital, infections and inflammation, neoplasms, diabetes mellitus. Developmental disorders, disordered renal function; urinary tract infections; vascular lesions affecting the kidney; urinary tract obstruction; renal failure; tumors. Radiographic anatomy of the normal urinary system and the radiographic appearances of common pathologies.
