This unit is designed to provide students with the requisite knowledge and understanding of the scientific and technological principles associated with the practice underpinning Computed Tomography (CT) imaging.

It introduces students to the associated instrumentation and protocols, positioning methods and radiation protection principles related to CT.

The unit will build on digital image processing introduced in RAD2001. The unit will introduce students to the variety of uses of CT in the diagnostic and therapeutic health environment.

Students will develop skills in relation to image critique and analysis with a particular emphasis on the axial skeleton and musculoskeletal system, the thorax, abdomen and pelvis.


Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the scientific principles underpinning modern multi-slice computed tomographic scanners;
  2. Articulate the technological characteristics and the relevant applications of multi-slice computed tomography medical imaging systems;
  3. Apply a range of radiation protection measures applicable to CT in simulated situations;
  4. Critically evaluate basic clinical scanning protocols, digital image processing techniques and equipment, image display and reconstruction routines used in CT
  5. Describe and interpret positioning and methods employed in CT examinations of the head, chest, abdomen/pelvis, and spine.
  6. Identify the key anatomical and pathological appearances in CT images of the head, chest, abdomen/pelvis,


  • Invigilated online test (1 hour) (20%)
  • 4 x portfolio (500 words each) (20%)
  • PowerPoint presentation (10 minutes) and reflection (500 words) (15%)
  • End of semester exam (2 hours) (45%)

Hurdle Requirement

  1. 80% attendance at tutorials and lab sessions to foster a professional approach to attendance and to facilitate group work.
  2. Students must pass each element of assessment to pass the unit, which means that students will have to put the same amount of effort into all assessments elements.

Workload requirements

6 hours of directed activities including interaction with Moodle based tasks, reading and activities per week. 6 hours self-directed learning
