Synopsis

This unit focuses in developing knowledge related to evidence-based professional practice shared in nursing and midwifery. The importance of leadership in healthcare and the role of leaders for the provision of safe and effective person-centered care (nursing) or woman-centered care (midwifery) will be explored.

Issues of privacy, confidentiality and respect for others will be tested in simulated healthcare environments.

Students will also be introduced to the standards of practice for nurses, midwives and mental health that regulate the professional roles and responsibilities as they pertain to the Australian healthcare system.

Emphasis is placed on the legal and ethical requirements that underpin practice as registered nurses and midwives, including Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC), Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and the concept of 'fitness to practice'.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Explain how leadership theories and leader attributes influence teamwork in nursing and midwifery practice.
  2. Explore the ethical theories and principles that are relevant in healthcare practice
  3. Justify the ethical approaches nurses and midwives need to consider when caring for patients and their families.
  4. Identify the legal concepts that apply to the delivery of nursing and midwifery practice.
  5. Discuss how nurses and midwives comply with the Australian laws in the healthcare setting.
