This unit examines the legal implications of management-staff relationships, covering topics such as the contract of employment, recruitment law, discrimination law, terminations including unfair and wrongful dismissals, mutuality of legal rights and obligations, health and safety law in the workplace, vicarious liability, as well as industrial action and constitutional considerations.
The learning goals associated with this unit are to:
- extend knowledge and comprehension of the legal framework governing workplace relations in Australia
- evaluate the principles underlying employment laws and assess the law's impact on the employment relationship
- demonstrate a working knowledge of employment law issues through the application of legal principles to a range of hypothetical scenarios
- identify and analyse current issues involving legal regulation of the workplace.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
