Synopsis
The overall objective of this unit is to gain an understanding of the history of the moving image as it sits in a contemporary art context. The course will cover a range of moving image works, from feature-length films produced with a cinema audience in mind to short films and artist-made films made for art audiences, gallery installations and non-cinematic modes of projection.
Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should:
- understand the dynamic role played by the moving image in modern and contemporary art;
- be familiar with key issues in the history of international and Australian art in the modern and contemporary period, as they relate to the moving image;
- be able to identify the cultural and historical circumstances in which these artworks have been produced;
- identify and understand the developments specific to the constant innovation of moving image practices during this period;
- have developed their ability to think creatively and express their ideas clearly in written communication.

Research essay 2500 words (60%)
