Description

The Graduate Certificate of Health Professions Education qualifies individuals to apply principles and theories that inform educational practice in a range of clinical and other relevant contexts to undertake professional and highly skilled work and as a pathway for further learning. This practice-based qualification is suitable for a broad range of health professionals who are, or will be, engaged in the teaching, assessment, evaluation, mentoring and supervision of health professionals in a range of clinical and other contexts.

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that students will be able to:

  1. Articulate a personal philosophy of learner-centred education
  2. Describe and apply learning theories that inform educational practice
  3. Identify and apply principles of curriculum design, using innovative educational approaches to meet learning objectives
  4. Review contemporary teaching methods for a range of clinical and other relevant contexts
  5. Plan, design, implement, assess and evaluate an educational programme
  6. Describe and practice feedback strategies to support learning
  7. Identify the role of mentoring and supervision for safe clinical practice
  8. Develop a strategy for further learning as a health professions educator.

Structure

This course consists of 24 points structured into three units.

This study will provide you with professional teaching and advanced supervisory skills in both clinical and non-clinical environments. It will facilitate the application of principles and theories that inform educational practice and allow for specialism through the choice of elective studies.

Requirements

The course comprises 24 points structured into three units.

Note: Students will receive 12 points of specified credit for elective units for prior studies undertaken at the Monash Institute for Health and Clinical Education (MIHCE) by means of assessed short courses.

All units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.

Students must complete:

  • HPE5100 Foundations of health professions education (12 points)

and 12 points from:

  • HPE5003 Assessment in health professions education
  • HPE5XXX Technology in education
  • HPE5XXX Rural health teaching and learning
  • HPE5XXX Clinical communication: Education
  • HPE5XXX Mentoring and supervision
  • HPE5XXX Learning conversations: Feedback and debriefing practices in health professions education.
