Description

This Bachelor of Education (Honours) specialisation qualifies graduates to teach primary school children from five to 12 years of age in primary schools. Students develop an understanding of how primary school aged children learn and how they can be effectively and creatively taught in key curriculum areas such as English and literacies, mathematics, arts education, humanities and social education, science, health and physical education, and studies of the environment and sustainability. In addition, students can develop content knowledge in specific areas by completing discipline studies in English and literacy, mathematics and numeracy or Languages Other than English (LOTE).

Requirements

Units are 6 credit points unless otherwise stated.

Education studies

Include developing understanding of teaching and learning theories for primary school children, and how to critically reflect on contemporary education issues and child development.

Students complete:

  • EDF1303 Learning and educational inquiry 1
  • EDF1304 Learning and educational inquiry 2
  • EDF2210 Child and adolescent development
  • EDF2031 Indigenous perspectives on teaching and learning
  • EDF3210 Education policy and practice*
  • EDF3211 Inclusive education: Teaching diverse learners
  • EDF4260 Curriculum, assessment and evaluation

* This unit is completed only by students studying the Bachelor of Education (Honours) as a single degree. It is an enrichment unit that does not cover core content.

Curriculum studies

Focus on the key elements of the primary curriculum; English and literacies, mathematics, arts education, humanities and social education, science, physical and health education, assessment and evaluation and studies of the environment and sustainability.

Students complete:

* These units are completed only by students studying the Bachelor of Education (Honours) as a single degree. They are enrichment units that do not cover core content.

Discipline studies

Develop content knowledge in specific areas of learning. If the Primary education specialisation is taken as a double degree with the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Visual Arts, the discipline studies requirement is completed in the partner degree.

  • EDF2161 Numeracy and mathematics for learning and life
  • EDF2162 Subject knowledge for teaching: Measurement and geometry
  • EDF3161 Subject knowledge for teaching: Statistics and probability
  • EDF3162 Leading mathematics and numeracy
LOTE (Languages Other than English)

Students meet the requirement for discipline studies through their studies in the partner degree:

Professional studies

Comprise professional experience and research units. Students engage in research, develop understanding of professional identity and leadership, and gain practical teaching experience by completing 80 days of supervised professional experience in primary schools.
