Course description

This double degree course allows students to qualify with both the Bachelor of Business and Commerce and Bachelor of Information technology and Systems degrees.

This double-degree program offers a range of business and information technology disciplines and provides students with the foundation on which further advanced business and information technology studies can be undertaken.

Course structure

Areas of study

Students must complete a major in one of the following disciplines taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics: accounting, business law (off-campus learning only), economics, e-business, human resource management, international business (off-campus learning only) management, and marketing. All units taken as part of the major are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the campus delivering this program. For details of the units required for major specialisations, refer to the Bachelor of Business and Commerce course entry in the ‘Outline of undergraduate studies – Gippsland’ section of this handbook.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Gippsland campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Students must complete either a major in applications development or business systems from the Faculty of Information Technology.

Course requirements

(a) students must complete 18 units (108 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:

(i) six compulsory core units (36 points):

(ii) a major specialisation of eight units (48 points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty with at least two units (12 points) at each of second and third-year levels. The major must come from the approved list of majors.

(iii) at least four non-compulsory units (24 points) must be taken outside the main field of study.

(iv) a maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points)

(b) students must complete 18 units (108 points) from the Faculty of Information Technology as follows:

(i) seven common core units (42 points):

(ii) a major specialisation in either applications development or business systems (66 points). For details of the units required for these major specialisations, refer to the list of majors below.

Applications development and networks

Students must complete the following:

  • FIT1007 Computer programming 2
  • FIT2005 Systems analysis and design 2
  • FIT2009 Data structure and algorithms
  • FIT2020 Networks and data communications 2
  • FIT3025 IT project 1
  • FIT3026 IT project 2
  • FIT2029 Web programming
  • FIT3037 Software engineering
  • FIT3046 Operating environments
  • two units (12 points) at level 3 from a schedule approved by the Faculty of Information Technology.
Business systems

Students must complete the following:

  • FIT1009 e-Commerce systems
  • FIT2005 Systems analysis and design
  • FIT2029 Web programming
  • FIT2033 Computer models for business decisions
  • FIT3002 Applications of data mining
  • FIT3019 Information systems management
  • FIT3025 IT project 1
  • FIT3026 IT project 2
  • one unit (6 points) at level 2 or 3 from a schedule approved by the Faculty of Information Technology.
  • two units (12 points) at level 3 from a schedule approved by the Faculty of Information Technology.
