Course description

This course is designed for people who are working or intend to work in any area of management, with a particular interest in human resources. It covers the compulsory knowledge base of essential human resource management units and integrates theoretical concepts, research and examples of human resource management in practice. It also emphasises the strategic role of human resources and their contribution to organisational performance and examines key elements of human resource management.

Credit for prior studies

Candidates articulating from an executive certificate or graduate certificate in the Department of Management will be eligible for credit for a maximum of four units (24 points) for study undertaken in the last five years.

Other candidates may be eligible for credit for a maximum of two units (12 points) if previous study is considered to be equivalent to particular units in the course of study. Credit is restricted to study undertaken in the last five years and must be approved by the program manager.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete four core units (24 points) as follows:

(i) three core units (18 points) from:

(ii) one unit (6 points) from the following:

  • MGX9180 Employee relations or
  • MGX9220 Industrial and workplace relations

(b) Students must complete a further four units (24 points) from:

(i) two 9000-level graduate units (12 points) taught by the Department of Management, other departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics or other faculties of the university, and

(ii) two units (12 points) chosen from 5000-level graduate units taught by the Department of Management, other departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other faculties of the university.

It is recommended that students consult with the course director to ensure their elective units form a coherent study program.

Articulation

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management may apply for admission to the Masters in Human Resource Management and would be eligible for credit for eight units.
