Units indexed by faculty Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of ScienceCourse code: 1469 + Course abbreviation: BCom/BSc + Total credit points required: 216 + 4.5 years full-time, 8 years part-time + Managing faculty: Business and Economics Study mode and course locationOn-campus (Clayton) Course descriptionThis double-degree program offers a range of commerce and business disciplines, with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills, combined with complementary studies in science. Each science discipline is designed to lead to careers in relevant employment areas. Course structureAreas of studyStudents must complete a major specialisation in one of the following areas taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics: accounting, Asian development and transition, business law and taxation, competition, regulation and public policy, econometrics and business statistics, economics, finance, human resource management, information, strategy and decision making, international commerce, labour and employment, management or marketing. All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus. For details of the units required for major specialisations, refer to the Bachelor of Commerce entry. Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics. Students must also complete a major sequence from the disciplines offered by the Faculty of Science. Course requirementsThe degree requirements are: (a) Students must complete 18 units (108 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows: (i) Completion of six compulsory common core units (36 points):
(ii) Completion of at least two units (12 points) from the following list:
First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully. (iii) A major specialisation of at least eight units (48 points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty with at least 12 points at each of second and third-year level. (iv) A maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points). (v) A minimum of four third-year-level units (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program. (b) Students must complete 16 units (96 points) from the Faculty of Science as follows: (i) The core unit SCI2010 (6 points). (ii) A major sequence in a science discipline or area of study. A science major is defined as a three-year sequence constituting at least 48 points following one of the two patterns:
(iii) At least one minor sequence in a different science area of study, consisting of 12 points at level 1 and at least 12 points at levels 2/3. The science major and minor sequences are listed in the section ‘Science areas of study and sequences’ in this handbook. (iv) Additional elective science units to ensure that at least 96 points of science units are taken overall. (v) Students may not complete more than 36 points of level-one units. (vi) Students must complete at least 24 points of level three science units. (c) After 108 points from units offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton) and 96 points from the Faculty of Science, the remaining 12 points may be taken from further science studies, or units offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics, or any other faculties. Students who wish to graduate with a Bachelor of Science, or undertake honours in science, prior to the completion of the The following unit is excluded from the double degree: STA1010 (Statistical methods for science). The course may be completed in 4.5 years of full-time study at a normal course load, or in four years of full-time study by overloading 6 points in each year. The maximum time for completion is 10 years. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that their enrolment complies with course requirements.
