Course description

This double-degree course is intended for potential engineers who wish to become more aware of economic, social, organisational and managerial aspects of the engineering profession.

Course structure

Areas of study

Students must complete a major specialisation in one of the following areas taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics: accounting, finance, economics, business law and taxation, econometrics and business statistics, management, marketing, Asian development and transition, international commerce, competition regulation and public policy, information strategy and decision making, labour and employment, and human resource management. All units taken as part of a major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus. For details of the units required for a major specialisation, refer to the Bachelor of Commerce entry.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Students must also complete the prescribed program in the mechatronics branch of engineering.

All units studied must be from the Faculty of Business and Economics at Clayton or those listed in the relevant Engineering entry below.

Course requirements

The degree requirements are:

(a) Students must complete 17 units (102 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:

(i) Completion of six compulsory common core units (36 points):

(ii) Completion of at least two units (12 points) from the following:

First-year students normally may not take a second-year-level unit until at least four first-year-level units have been completed successfully.

(iii) Completion of a major specialisation of at least eight units (48 points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty with at least two units (12 points) at each of second and third-year level.

(iv) A major specialisation of at least eight units (48 points).

(v) A maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points).

(vi) A minimum of four third-year-level units (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

(b) Students must complete 25 engineering units (150 points) from the Faculty of Engineering as follows:

First year

Completion of five compulsory core units (30 points):

plus (depending on VCE subjects completed) one foundation unit (6 points) from:

Second year

(Eng 30 points)

Fourth year

(Eng 30 points)

  • TRC3600 Modelling and control
  • TRC4000 Mechatronics final year project I

(Eng 30 points)

The course may be completed in five to five-and-a-half years of full-time study at a normal course load. The maximum time for completion is 10 years.
