Course description

This double-degree program offers professional education in a range of commerce and information technology disciplines and provides students with the foundation on which further advanced commerce and information technology studies can be undertaken.

Course structure

Areas of study

Students must complete a major specialisation in either accounting, Asian development and transition; business law and taxation; competition, regulation and public policy; econometrics and business statistics; economics; finance; human resource management; information, strategy and decision-making; international commerce; labour and employment; management; or marketing. All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus. For details of the units required for major specialisations, refer to the Bachelor of Commerce entry.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Course requirements

(a) Students must complete 18 units (108 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:

(i) Completion of six compulsory common core units (36 points):

• AFC1021/AFC1022 Accounting principles
• BTC1110 Business law
• ECC1000 Principles of microeconomics
• ETC1000 Business and economic statistics
• MGC1010 Managing people and organisations
• MKC1200 Principles of marketing

(ii) Completion of at least two units (12 points) from the following:

• AFC1100/AFC2100 Introduction to finance, or
  AFC1030 Introduction to financial accounting
• ECC1100 Principles of macroeconomics
• ETC1010 Data modelling and computing
• MGC1020 Organisations: contexts and strategies

First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.

(iii) A major specialisation of at least eight units (48 points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty, with at least two units (12 points) at each of second and third-year level.

(iv) A maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points).

(v) A minimum of four third-year-level units (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

AFC2160 Computers and accounting is excluded from the double degree.

All units in the commerce component must be taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

(b) Students must complete 18 units (108 points) from the Faculty of Information Technology as follows:

First year

Completion of six compulsory common core units (36 points):

• FIT1001 Computer systems (6 points)
• FIT1002 Computer programming (6 points)
• FIT1003 IT in organisations (6 points)
• FIT1004 Database (6 points)
• FIT1005 Networks and data communications (6 points)
• FIT1013 IT for business (6 points)

Second year

• FIT2001 Systems analysis and design (6 points)
• FIT2002 IT Project management (6 points)
• FIT2006 Business process modelling and workflow (6 points)
• FIT2011 Decision support systems fundamentals (6 points)
• FIT2013 eBusiness technologies (6 points)
• FIT2017 Computer models for business decision making (6 points)

Third year

• FIT3003 Business intelligence and data warehousing (6 points)
• FIT3009 eBusiness systems (6 points)
• FIT3012 Enterprise systems (6 points)
• FIT3022 Intelligent decision support systems (6 points)

Elective units

Two third-year-level BBIS elective units (12 points) chosen from a schedule published by the Faculty of IT (double-degree students who take an IBL placement stream complete FIT3045 (Industry-based learning)* (18 points) instead of two third-year-level BBIS electives (12 points) and one of FIT3003, FIT3022, FIT3009 or FIT3012.

* Subject to approval (see equivalent unit BUS3000 in the 'Unit information' section of this handbook).

(c) Students must also satisfy the following double-degree regulations:

(i) Completion of 36 units (216 points) over a maximum of 10 years of study.

(ii) A maximum of 15 units (90 points) of first-year-level units.

(iii) A minimum of 10 units (60 points) of third-year-level units.
