Course description

This double degree caters for the demand within the information technology industry for people with both professional computing and professional communication skills. There is also a demand for graduates with computing expertise in a range of areas that require professional communication skills, including journalism and media-related occupations. The course is directed towards those students who have relevant career goals and who combine ability with high motivation. Potential employers include mainstream and alternative media organisations and a wide variety of public and private organisations.

Course structure

Students must complete 96 points in the Bachelor of Arts (Communication) component and 96 points in the Bachelor of Information Technology component.

Majors and other studies

Minors can be taken in Australian studies, community studies, history-politics, journalism, Indonesian, Australian Indigenous studies, philosophy, psychological studies, psychology, public relations, social and community welfare, sociology or writing.

Course requirements
Arts (communication) component

(a) a communications major (48 points) - COM1010, COM1020, COM2407/COM3407, COM2409/COM3409, COM2411/COM3411, COM2413/COM3413, COM2423/COM3423 and one of COM2408/COM3408, COM2417/COM3417 or PRL2003
(b) an arts minor (24 points)
(c) arts electives (24 points), including 12 points at first-year level
(d) the prescribed 16-unit computing sequence in systems development, business systems or network technology (96 points)
(e) a total of 192 points.

Information technology component:
System development sequence

* Students may opt to take the 12-point unit GCO3800 (Industry project) in place of the six-point unit GCO3819 (Computing project).

Network technology sequence

**Students may opt to take the 12-point unit GCO3800 (Industry project) in place of six-point GCO3819 (Computing project).

Plus two electives to be chosen from:

Students cannot graduate from either degree until they have satisfied the above requirements and successfully completed studies to the value of 144 credit points. Students undertaking the above double-degree program are permitted to count up to 48 credit points of the other faculty's component towards those 144 credit points. Students must also complete at least 36 credit points at third-year level to meet Bachelor of Arts (Communication) requirements.
Note that students have a maximum of 10 years to complete this course.
