Synopsis: As for COM2413.
Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will have: 1) understanding of the policy approach to communications and culture; 2) ability to identify the key rhetorics informing media regulation and the ways in which they function within and through particular policy; 3) knowledge of the historical development of the general communications sector; 4) understanding of the significance of globalisation, convergence and deregulation as challenges facing cultural and communications policy; 5) developed understanding of the historical rise of the nation-state and of the implications of that history for the development of communications policy; 6) a strong grasp of the complex inter-relationship of communications industries with political, economic, technical, cultural and social forces at national, regional and international levels; 7) ability to conduct independent research.
Assessment: Essay (2500 words): 50% + Examination (2 hours): 50% + Students taking the unit at 3rd level will be required to demonstrate, in both assessment tasks, a stronger awareness of the historical development and significance of the nation-state in the formation of communications policy.
Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
Prerequisites: COM1010 and COM1020 or equivalents
