Clinical honours thesis II: Framing a research proposal (12 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: At the completion of the unit the student will be expected to: 1. Identify a research topic that addresses a significant clinical issue. This may be a part of an existing project, or alternatively a new initiative; 2. Develop a research problem, question or hypothesis; 3. Formulate and present a research plan; 4. Develop and present a research proposal; 5. Participate in research seminars and workshops; 6. Apply to ethics committees for research approval as necessary; 7. Develop a learning contract addressing the clinical learning needs of the student; 8. Demonstrate safe clinical practice based on sound theoretical knowledge and reasoning; 9. Perform detailed nursing clinical assessment of clients; 10. Resolve clinical problems appropriately; 11. Proficiently implement nursing care as planned; 12. Demonstrate sensitivity to the cultural dimensions of care; 13. Practice with increasing independence; and 14. Incorporate evidence based practice findings into clinical practice.

Assessment: Research plan to be formulated and presented early in the semester: Oral seminar presentation (15 minutes) 10%, Written submission (500 - 1000 words) 10% Research proposal to be developed by end of semester: Oral seminar presentation (20 minutes) 15%, Written submission/proposal (5000 words) 50%, Ethics application(s) 15%, and Clinical assessment including Learning Contract Pass/Fail (*Students must pass clinical to pass subject)

Prerequisites: NUR2103, NUR2113, NUR2104, NUR3106, NUR2201, NUR2203, NUR2304, NUR3305, NUR2401 and NUR4401
