A major sequence is offered in mathematics and modelling and a minor
sequence is available in applied statistics.
The mathematics and modelling sequence provides a grounding in mathematical
techniques relevant to modelling and problem analysis, spanning continuous and
discrete mathematics and both deterministic and stochastic modelling. The
applied statistics units cover the design of experiments and surveys and the
analysis and interpretation of the data that they yield, emphasising the
appropriate choice of techniques and use of computer software. There is an
opportunity to combine these disciplines with a sequence of computing or
business decision support units. Many employers are looking for graduates with
such a range of expertise.
MAT1055 and MAT1085 are essential for the major in mathematics and modelling; MAT1077 is recommended also but is not a prerequisite for higher-level units. MAT1049 is designed for students lacking a Year 12 level background in calculus and related mathematics broadly equivalent to VCE Mathematical Methods units 3 and 4.
