This course has been introduced to provide a combination generalist/specialist
degree incorporating specific vocational education. Students will graduate
with a full welfare qualification, recognised by the Australian Institute of
Welfare and Community Workers, plus a major and minor study in other disciplines.
In addition to meeting standard entry requirements all applicants are required to complete a Social Welfare Course Administration Form. This form can be obtained from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences. Applicants will be shortlisted on the basis of information contained in this form, for a more detailed selection process. Applicants are strongly advised that academic criteria are not the only ones for entry into the course. Other factors such as work experience and life experience, personal qualities and maturity are taken into account.
This course is recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.
A
candidate for the double degree must fulfil the following requirements to
receive the awards of Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Social Welfare:
(a) complete at least 192 but not more than 216 points
(b) complete four core subjects (24 points):
or
(c) complete the prescribed sequence in social welfare, an
arts major sequence (48 points) and an arts minor sequence (24 points) from
within the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences
disciplines
(e) undertake additional prescribed studies to complete the 192 points
needed for the degrees.
The
arts major may be chosen from gender studies, history-politics, Indonesian,
Koorie studies, mass communications, psychology*, sociology or writing (details
on each discipline are provided under the entry for the School of Humanities,
Communications and Social Sciences).

The arts minor may be chosen from Australian studies, community studies, journalism and all of the above arts major sequences.
Students should note that the study program below outlines the BA/Bachelor of Social Welfare as a full-time student; obviously this program would differ slightly for part-time/distance education students.
# STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SELECT EITHER GSC1601 OR GSC1602 AS THEIR FIRST-LEVEL CORE SUBJECT. STUDENTS WHO INTEND TO UNDERTAKE STUDIES IN PSYCHOLOGY ARE ADVISED TO TAKE GSC1602 RATHER THAN GSC1601 AS THEIR RESEARCH METHODS CORE SUBJECT, AS GSC1601 AND PSY2051 ARE A PROHIBITED COMBINATION.
