Biochemistry and molecular biology

The discipline

Biochemistry and molecular biology is a discipline that is central to all the life sciences and biomedical sciences. It seeks to describe the molecular basis of living systems from viruses to humans.
Biochemistry and molecular biology are first offered as subjects at the second-year level. Many students will wish to make biochemistry and molecular biology a major field of study in the second and third years of the course. For these students, the second-year subject combinations BCH2011 (The molecules of life) and BCH2022 (Energy metabolism of cells and tissues), together with MOL2011 (Molecular biology: genes and their expression) and MOL2022 (Molecular biology: gene technology and its application) are needed for entry into third-year subjects. In 2000, BCH3011 (Biomolecules and technology) and BCH3022 (Molecular biology of the cell) are ofered for third-year students as two sequential 12-point subjects, one in each semester.
The fourth-year subject BCH4000 (Biochemistry and molecular biology), incorporating research training as well as minor coursework, leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science with honours in biochemstry and molecular biology.
In 2000, the subjects BCH3031 (Biomedical biochemistry and molecular biology) and BCH3042 (Biochemistry and molecular biology of disease) provide two sequential, 12-point subjects, one in each semester, for students completing the third year of the BSc (Biomedical) degree course. These subjects also lead to the biochemistry and molecular biology honours subject BCH4000.

Subjects offered

MOL2011 and MOL2022 are offered in conjuntion with the departments of Biological Sciences and Microbiology
