Aims

This double degree course is designed to enable graduates to pursue a computing career in areas requiring a strong business and commercial background, or a career in one of the business discipline areas supported by commercially relevant professional computing skills.
Given the increasing impact of technological change on organisations, their structures and their operations, more business graduates need vocational level skills in computing and equally, more computing graduates need the ability to apply their skills and knowledge over a greater range of business and commercial applications. This course has been developed to cater for these trends by providing business students the opportunity to develop an in depth knowledge of computing skills by completing a system development major or business systems major which are not available in the bachelor of business. The degree also enables computing students the option of developing in depth business skills and knowledge, which is not available in the bachelor of computing, in at least two or more of the following bachelor of business degree areas: accounting, economics, marketing, management and tourism management.

Entry requirements

Normal Monash entry requirements of the VCE or an equivalent qualification apply. Successful applicants will have above average results, with a grade average of at least C in English, and at least a D in an area of Mathematics. Students who have completed the first year of the Bachelor of Business or the Bachelor of Computing with good academic results may be admitted to the second year of the double degree with full credit for appropriate first-year studies.
Mature aged applicants are considered on the basis of their employment history, educational background and career objectives. A lack of formal qualifications should not discourage inquiry.

Course structure

The course involves four years of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study by distance education. Students complete a total of at least 198 credit points, comprising:

(a) Completion of the following seven core subjects:

(b) either (i) completion of two business major sequences of six subjects (but including one subject from (a) above) selected from accounting, economics, marketing and management; or (ii) completion of one business major sequence of six subjects drawn from the strands in (i) above, combined with two submajor sequences each of four subjects (but including one core subject from (a) above) drawn from accounting, economics, marketing and management, business computing and law.

Credits/exemptions

Appropriate credits may be granted for approved studies completed at a recognised post-secondary institution, including other universities, TAFE institutes, and the Open Learning Agency of Australia.

Aims

The course has been designed to prepare students to work at a professional level in a scientifically oriented environment in which application of modern business techniques is required, or in a commercial environment in which a background in science or information technology is desirable.

Entry requirements

The basic requirement for entry to the course is satisfactory completion of a secondary school program equivalent to the VCE. Applicants will be expected to have above-average results in Year 12 English and Mathematics, plus preferably at least one subject of either Information Technology, Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
Students who have completed the first year of the normal Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Business at the Gippsland campus with good academic results may be admitted to the second year of the double degree with full credit for appropriate first-year studies.
Mature age applicants will be assessed on the basis of their employment and overall educational background and career objectives.
