Synopsis: Systems programming techniques and system software tools. Using existing systems software: shell scripts, Perl, filters, debugging and other tools. Developing systems software: making operating system calls, techniques used in common systems programs. Compilers and interpreters: using lex and yacc to facilitate software development. Applications in web CGI programming. Access to the university's computer systems through an Internet service provider is compulsory for distance education students.

Assessment: Assignments: 30% + Examination (3 hours): 70%
