Description

The Bachelor of Arts is a general, flexible degree which allows students to match academic interests with career aspirations to create a personalised course progression. Studying humanities will develop general knowledge and specific intellectual skills relating to human thought and relations, such as the way we communicate or how the past has affected the present. Social science analyses and explains societies and the relationships of individuals within those societies.

The Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) component of this double degree is designed for those seeking a career in the banking and finance industry, especially in commercial and investment banking, corporate finance, stock markets, capital markets and derivative markets.

Objectives

This course provides specialist study in a number of key functional areas of relevance to financial institutions and markets and the core business foundation units combined with the broad teaching and learning objectives of the Bachelor of Arts degree. Structure

Students must complete 96 points in the Bachelor of Arts component and 96 points in the Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) component.

Requirements

Arts component

(a.) an arts discipline major (48 points)

(b.) an arts discipline minor (24 points)

(c.) an additional arts discipline first-year sequence (12 points)

(d.) a further 12 points in arts units

Business component

(i.) six compulsory common core units (36 points):

(ii.) a major of 10 units (60 points) in banking and finance

  • the requirements of the major are listed below
  • at least two units (12 points) must be completed at each of second and third-year levels.

Additional degree requirements:

  • a maximum of eight first-year level units (48 points)
  • a minimum of four third-year level units (24 points) from those offered by the faculty at the Caulfield campus.
  • in addition to specific unit prerequisites, second-year leve l units require the successful completion of three first-year level units and third-year level units require the successful completion of two second-year level units.

  • AFF2401 Commercial banking and finance
  • AFF2631 Financial management
  • AFF3121 Investments and portfolio management
  • AFF3841 Lending decisions
  • MGX3100 Management ethics and corporate governance

Professional recognition

This degree satisfies the education requirements for senior associate membership of the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance. Holders of the degree who have not completed the two years of employment in the banking and finance industry required for senior associate membership are eligible for associate membership in the interim.
