Synopsis

This unit examines the nature of managerial work in organisations; theories of management; the management of people as individuals and groups; the importance of leadership and motivation; the principles by which change is introduced into organisations; and the key factors in the organisation's environment that impact on the work of managers and the organisations.

Objectives

The learning objectives of this unit are to:

• define the purposes and scope of management, people and organisations;
• evaluate the impact of internal and external factors on management thought and practice;
• describe differences between people management at individual and group levels;
• analyse management functions and processes and apply these to a range of situations;
• critically analyse methods of managing people in organisations.

Assessment

Written assignments of 1500 words (15%) and 2500 words (25%)
Tutorial participation: 10%
Examination (2 hours): 50%

Three hours of class contact.
