Synopsis

Topics include an overview of financial systems and the roles of financial institutions, the characteristics of financial contracts, equity finance and the stock exchange, financial mathematics and the concept of present value, debt finance and financial leverage, financial derivatives and financial innovation.

Objectives

The learning objectives of this unit are to:

• describe the institutions, instruments and markets that comprise a developed financial system;
• apply the concepts and techniques used by financial professionals in the debt, equity, foreign exchange and derivative markets;
• define the specialist terms and language of finance;
• develop skills in the application of financial mathematics;
• apply critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills to individual and /or group activities dealing with introductory finance.

Assessment

Assignment(s): 20%
Examination (3 hours): 80%

Contact hours

Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week
