Course description

This course is designed for people who are working or intend to work in any area of management, with a particular interest in human resources. It provides managers who already hold an undergraduate degree with the opportunity to undertake formal study and gain a qualification in the field of human resource management. It also enables managers to make the transition to a new role in human resource management.

The course provides study for graduates who are actively involved and interested in managerial and strategic issues related to managing people. Students have the opportunity to develop their knowledge base in human resource management by examining the theoretical bases and research in this field. Further, units in this course cover a wide range of contemporary practical issues related to managing human resources.

Credit for prior studies

Candidates may be eligible for credit for a maximum of one unit (6 points) if previous study is considered to be equivalent to particular units in the course of study. Credit is restricted to study undertaken in the last five years and must be approved by the program manager.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete two core units (12 points):

  • MGX9600 Managing people and organisations
  • MGX9850 Human resource management

(b) Students must complete one core unit (6 points) from either:

  • MGX9180 Employee relations*, or
  • MGX9220 Industrial and workplace relations

(c) Students must complete one elective unit (6 points) from 9000-level units taught by the Department of Management, other departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other faculties of the university.

It is recommended that students consult with the course director to ensure their elective units form a coherent study program.

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management may apply for admission to either the Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management or the Master of Human Resource Management and would be eligible for credit for four units.
