Synopsis: This unit introduces students to the obstacles that women may experience during childbearing. Students will be assisted to develop their existing knowledge and skills by working with women and other members of the healthcare team when problems arise during pregnancy, labour and birth and the first weeks after birth. Emphasis is given to the collaborative role of the midwife, referral, use of medical technology and intervention, and the implications for women, their babies and the midwives. The unit consists of four learning subunits facilitating students to be self-directed in their progress through the subject material and between learning subunits and complements the practice unit MID3104.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, the student will be expected to be able to: 1. utilise knowledge from the biosciences applicable to woman experiencing obstacles; 2. examine specific medical and obstetric conditions that affect childbearing; 3. evaluate the implications of obstetric interventions for the woman and midwifery practice; 4. critically examine the use of technology in midwifery and obstetric practice; 5. demonstrate skills in the management of emergencies; 6. interpret the role of the midwife as a member of a collaborative health-care team; 7. explore community resources available to support women in the community; and 8. demonstrate midwifery competency based upon the ACMI Competency Standards.

Assessment: Written assignment (1500 words): 30% + Guided study activities (2 x 500 words): 20% + Examination (2 hours): 50%
