Synopsis: The experience of childbearing occurs within, and is influenced by, a woman's social and cultural contexts. In working with childbearing women, midwives encounter women from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. In developing caring relationships, midwives need to understand different influences and to incorporate them into midwifery care. This unit seeks to assist students to appreciate how personal values, beliefs and prejudices are shaped by such aspects as gender, race, social circumstances and culture.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, students should be able to: 1. develop an understanding of their own values and beliefs, and the challenge presented when working with women who are different from their selves; 2. discuss the impact that social inequities have on women's childbearing experiences; 3. demonstrate an understanding of the needs of lesbian and bisexual women in relation to childbearing; 4. demonstrate an understanding of alternative methods of assisting conception; 5. demonstrate practice that reflects cultural safety and sensitivity; and 6. demonstrate competency according to selected ACMI Competency Standards for Midwives (1998).

Assessment: Written assignment: 50% + Reflective journal: 20% + Guided study activities: 30%
