Synopsis: This unit introduces students to the role of the midwife in contemporary midwifery practice. Students will explore the philosophical basis of midwifery to develop an understanding of the basic premises "being with woman", "woman centredness" and "working in partnership" in preparation for assuming the role. Students will be provided with the opportunity to explore the primary functions of a midwife with a focus on the principles of basic midwifery care, principles of health promotion, introduction to health assessment and introduction to primary health counselling.

Objectives: On completion of this unit the student will be able to: - 1.describe the role of the midwife in contemporary midwifery practice; 2.discuss the philosophical basis underpinning the role of the midwife in contemporary midwifery practice; 3.demonstrate an understanding of the principles of basic midwifery care; 4.identify the important principles of health promotion; 5.describe the principles of primary health counselling; 6.discuss the essential components of the health assessment process; 7.identify key support organizations to be found in the community who will provide assistance to childbearing woman; 8.demonstrate an understanding of the need for reflective practice for the implementation of evidence informed care; 9.demonstrate developing midwifery competence based upon the ACMI Competency Standards.

Assessment: Written assignment: 30% + Guided study activities: 20% + Examination: 50%

Contact Hours: Flexible mode with both Off-Campus and On-campus components Students will be required to participate in four (4) hours off campus workload including a variety of online lectures, seminars, interactive exercises and guided study activities each week for 13 weeks. In addition students will be required to attend a one (1) hour tutorial on campus per week for 13 weeks. Seven (7) hours self directed study time per week for 13 weeks.
