Synopsis: This practice unit introduces students to the fundamentals of midwifery care within the family/community where childbearing women live and work. It introduces students to a number of fundamental concepts, processes and skills required for midwifery practice. The unit is designed for beginning students in a comprehensive undergraduate midwifery program. It aims to develop knowledge and skills for the promotion of individual health, growth and development within a women centred focus of learning.
Objectives: On completion of this subject, students will be able to, describe the concept of health from a physiological, psychological, cultural and ecological perspectives; begin to evaluate the concept of health needs or challenges for the childbearing woman and women at various stages of their reproductive lives; perform selected basic midwifery skills in a simulated environment using an evidence-based midwifery approach; explain the role and levels of communication in the midwife-woman relationship; describe the roles of midwives and their relationship with other health care professionals through observations made in a maternity service environment; demonstrate skills for the assessment of health and development of childbearing women; accurately collect and record data for health profiles and/or health histories for ten (10) child bearing women of various ages and social situations; meet with a minimum of ten (10) women expecting to birth later in the year for the purpose of "following through" their birthing experience; reflect on the nature of the relationship that has been established with the women they are following through in a way that explores their own involvement as well as the woman's attitudes and responses.
Assessment: Written examination: 50% + Clinical fieldwork: 50% + Practical skills examination: pass/fail (students must pass this examination to pass the unit)
